Monitoring

Objective: To provide quantitive information on the environmental and physical processes in the coastal area.

The council has undertaken monitoring of the coastal area for a number of years. This has largely involved beach profiles and sediment monitoring. The large scale construction works at Cleveleys makes it necessary to undertake detailed monitoring of the effects and process along the foreshore that are affected by and affect the coastal defences.

The council are primarily interested in the monitoring of coastal evolution directly in front of the Cleveleys sea wall. A video monitoring system known as Argus system has been set up to take hourly digital images of the foreshore. These images are then analysed by Lancaster University to determine the effects of the sea wall and to improve future designs.

Monitoring of weather conditions at Cleveleys is needed for construction record purposes and for long term analysis of tidal conditions including extreme storm events.

This monitoring will feed into the Cell 11 Regional Monitoring Framework which provides the data to allow a strategic management approach for nearly 750km of open coast and estuarial shoreline.

Key Benefits

  • Improvements to detailed design of coastal defences within Wyre and the larger worldwide coastal community.
  • Monitoring and display of the construction sequence.
  • Collection of long term trends in the immediate coastal area.
  • Monitoring of storms and their effects.
  • Advancement in research education and public participation.
  • Monitoring of environmental changes due to the scheme.
